a matter of stars

a matter of stars

It is a waltz, feet un-designed yet ruled
by a pattern as music covets control,
discharges freedom within the structure;
there are flimsy walls, trembling floors
and other tumblers also dancing.

In the dark, we feel the chains,
discern the cage; alcohol-infused tongues
lick the fur, hands sharpen blunt claws,
we pretend to be human,
rather than bears dancing to a tune
we never composed.

In the morning, we brush away the blood,
gargle words of advice to any and all
who will listen, hide our screams
behind train rides to and from the city.

We coalesce into large collections
of solitary beings, sunspots for eyes
and minds that can never remember
when we were brilliant stars.

Bereft of the god’s face, our psyche yearns,
strives to listen to the atoms within, conscious
that one day the smallest parts will journey
to places thoughts can only imagine.

I see my father in the tail of a comet.
I remember my friend in the sunset, a sky pink
and promising all is well.

I dance in the construct called time,
to protect the mind from the vast
that cannot be grasped.

All we have we must lose,
all but the particles first bequeathed
when the sun exploded with a howl
no one heard

Is that it,
are we the ears made to listen?

Guardian gone

Guardian gone
(For Rilke’s angels)

I have lost my angel
I felt him there when I was young,
guardian of mine — comforting one…

of an evening as my head rested on the pillow,
nostrils inhaling the sunshine
the cotton had captured,
I would feel the tips of wings touch,
softer than a baby’s first thought,

my forehead, I recalled the ocean
smoothing sand each time it ventured forth…
then back, then forth again.

He once walked beside me,
present as a stick held in the hand
or a school bag slung across a shoulder,
accepted and never consulted,
a weight that lifted hours and words,
helped me walk away home
and reminded me to return.

I cannot pinpoint the time
or the place
he was mislaid, only that
one morning I discovered him no longer…
when I considered the absence, I realized
it had been so for many days.

Winter arrives with the herald Dearth
trumpeting silence and
the sun’s growing distance
no matter how often I stare at my remote reflection
he will not return

cannot

he would no longer recognize me
even if he was looking.

rip

mouth spitting out
salty water
feet already beneath
the sand
lost dreams swept back and forth
never to settle never
to reform
unless mangroves bind them
bring them back to life
if deposited
still at the mercy of the wind
the waves
already clawing them back

waves push hard against the chest
if the undercurrent secret lover
of the moon finds the wind
and the time of day favourable
it has the power to haul the feet
out of the sand
drag the body away
ignores the hand that struggles to wave
quickly fills the throat to steal
the voice no
cries for help

another whole
broken down
 grit
and memory for those on the shore
stranded
their voices to record
the horror
though water and wind
heed not
